EA’s CEO Criticizes the Wii-mote

EA’s CEO John Riccitiello, in a recent interview VentureBeat.com, had some less than flattering comments about the Wii’s Wii remote.

Here’s what Mr. Riccitiello said in the interview:

——

“The Wii MotionPlus is going to be good. If I had to pick one thing we suffered from, it was imprecise control on the Wii. That meant certain genres were never going to perform as well on the Wii. There are a couple of franchises in our booth. Go look at Dead Space and imagine playing that game with a wand and a Nunchuk. If they improve the precision, then you could have a good experience. There is no doubt that Wii Speak will appeal to a certain group of people. I thought what was nice is that they created an opportunity for third parties to be more successful.”

——

Nintendo announced MotionPlus, an add on peripheral for the Wiimote, at this year’s E3 and boasted that this upgrade would bring complete accuracy to the Wii remote.

[insert opinion here]

As much as we were all excited to hear about the MotionPlus for the Wii-mote, something made us wonder why 1) the Wii-mote didn’t have this functionality from day one and 2) if it’s not going to have it from day one, what the hell took so long.

EA has never been known for being shy, and while taking shots at the industry leader in the console race isn’t very nice, or politically correct, we can’t say we disagree. Nintendo is taking a step in the right direction towards improvement with the MotionPlus, but they do now have to answer for the original shortcomings they’ve essentially admitted to.
