The Next Call of Duty Game Announced (seriously)
Activision has recently announced that they have plans to release the next Call of Duty game some time in 2009. This next installment will be the one after World at War, which is currently slated for an October release this year.
We don’t have any details, or even a title, but we do it’s coming, and it’s coming in 2009. One additional bit of information from Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick was that series would continue to alternate between developers, meaning Call of Duty 4 geniuses Infinity Ward would likely be behind this next 2009 installment.
[insert opinion here]
Look, we all love the Call of Duty series, and we all certainly acknowledge CoD4 for the masterpiece that it is. But could we please stop with the litany of releases already? Seriously, we’re still playing Call of Duty 4. We’re not going to stop any time soon, if you just leave well enough alone you’ll have the masses entertained for at least a couple more years. I’m not saying another Call of Duty game is necessarily a bad thing, I’m saying I don’t see the need for another release just yet. Even World at War felt a little early. Now we hear another game is set to be out by ‘09.
We’re not saying you need to be worried about the quality of the CoD franchise just yet, but if they continue to pump out yearly releases like this, we have to wonder how long it will be before meeting an annual deadline takes precedent over developing a stellar game. At the moment Activision has both quality and quantity, no question. But this recent development makes us wonder which one they (and their wallets) would choose if they had to pick between the two.
(And yes, we know lolcats is a dead internet meme already. We just thought the absurdity of the news made the image appropriate. Plus IGL likes kittens. Deal with it.)
