Nintendo Promises ‘Better’ Storage Solution than a HDD

In an interview with Club Nintendo, that was translated by a reader from GoNintendo, and reported by Kotaku and 1UP, Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo CEO, said that Nintendo will not introduce a harddrive for the Wii, but is currently working on a better solution.

Fils-Aime didn’t elaborate on what that solution was, only that it was being worked on.

[insert opinion here]

While we’re always glad to hear Nintendo is working outside of the box, we don’t necessarily think they need to go reinventing the wheel. The Wii needs more storage space (thanks to the largely successful WiiWare) and a HDD is the simplest, and like most cost effective, way to solve that problem.

Besides, what exactly could they introduce that would be universally accepted as ‘better’ than a HDD? I mean, granted, I don’t smoke the magical crack that leads Nintendo to invent some of the trippy shit they do, but I’m pretty tech savvy, and I can’t imagine many options that beat a simple external HDD. The Wii has a couple of USB ports, put those to use and let people plug in their own external HDDs, sell a Nintendo brand one (manufactured by someone else, naturally) and offer it in varying sizes for a reasonable price.

The fanboys will go wild, trust me. Something better? Keep it simple for everyone’s sake.

Think about it, seriously.
